Enjoy The Festivities But Don't Overeat

If you grew up in a household anything like mine you can probably still hear your mother's voice ringing in your ears "eat what's on your plate, or no dessert". It didn't make sense to me as a child, after all, I either didn't like what was put in front of me, or I'd simply had enough. Now that I'm older I can understand where she was coming from. She was a young girl living in Europe during WWII, and experienced hunger first hand. Food in our house was definitely not something to be wasted and God forbid we turned our noses up at what she served 'cause that was grounds for a lecture! Now that I'm older and hopefully somewhat wiser, that admonishment still lingers, and I have a really hard time limiting my food intake at a buffet, particularly around the holidays. I mean it's all soooo good! Here are some things that I do to make sure I don't overindulge and pay for it the day after with indigestion or weeks later with weight gain; Zero in on the protein and fiber rich foods such as vegetables, salads, whole grains, nuts, lean meats and fish. These foods are not only good for you; they'll fill you up so you'll be less likely to stuff yourself with Black Forest cake. Limit, or simply avoid, refined breads and pastas which fill you up, but they don't do all that much for you nutrition wise and they will leave you feeling hungry again quite soon. Eat slowly. Before going back for seconds, take your time eating the firsts! Pace yourself. Chew small bites carefully. This will give your body enough time to realize it's full and tell your brain it's time to stop eating. It's okay to have some dessert. I said some, not enough to open your own dessert shop. Consider sharing a piece of double chocolate cake with your partner or a friend, or just cut the piece in two, leaving the other half for another conscientious person like yourself. If you see someone at the dessert table gazing longingly at the pecan pie, go ahead and ask them if they'd like to split a piece with you. Chances are they'll be grateful for the intervention! If you know that you'll be more than tempted to overeat, have a snack before you leave the house. Another easy option is to limit your food intake the day or two before the big bash so that if you do have that entire piece of Mississippi Mud Pie, the calories will balance out. Be active the day after the party. Go to the gym, take a walk, go for a swim, have a snowball fight, it really doesn't matter what you do, as long as you move.
